Research and creative work in some academic fields lend themselves to a visual display. In a face-to-face conference, posters offer the opportunity to present data and prompt discussions with interested colleagues. The conference audience will circulate among the posters stopping to discuss projects of particular interest.
We will provide an easel with a display board (and push pins) for your one poster to be exhibited. The poster may be up to 36 x 48 inches in size. A tri-fold board can also be used on the easel. Presenters should describe their research or creative work for five to seven minutes and be ready to respond to questions from the conference audience members circulating for the remainder of the time.
At the top of your poster or sign, include the title of your project and the names of the authors. To prepare your discussion for this presentation format, consider how best to get your points across to a small audience. Provide a clear introduction of your topic, clearly identifiable main points that are well-supported, and a strong conclusion that reinforces the central idea. Be sure to consider proper sentence structure, word usage, and vocabulary.
A second option to present your work is a table-top or floor visual display of an artistic or research product. Like the poster presentations, this type of display will also offer the opportunity to present data and prompt discussions with interested colleagues. The conference audience will circulate among the posters stopping to discuss projects of particular interest.
We will provide a table or area for your table-top or floor display. At the end of the registration form, you will be asked if you need a special consideration, like access to an outlet or other space requirement. Presenters should describe their research or creative work for five to seven minutes and be ready to respond to questions from the conference audience members circulating for the remainder of the time.
Research can also be presented in a more formal way in an oral presentation that can include visual aids. You will be in a session with four or five other presenters, each taking turns to share their project. Plan to stay for the entire session.
Your presentation will be 12 minutes, followed by 3-minute question and answer session. To prepare, consider how to best convey the main points to the audience. Provide a clear introduction of your topic, clearly identifiable main points that are well-supported, and a strong conclusion that reinforces the central idea. Be sure to consider proper sentence structure, word usage, and vocabulary.
Presenters should arrive at least 5 minutes before the beginning of the session to introduce yourself to your judges and the moderator. Do not arrive just for your presentation time.
A musical or theatrical performance is an option to present creative work. Like the other formats, you should plan on using 12 minutes for your performance and three minutes for questions. Practice your performance ahead of time, to make sure you do not go over the time limit. It will be helpful to the audience if you provide some context for your performance: Why did you choose this particular musical piece or dramatic scene? What does it mean to you? Where does it fit into the context of the overall piece or artistic history? What should the audience take away from your performance?
